The Anatomy of Mitochondria

The Anatomy of Mitochondria.jpg

Here at Bodē Pro, it is not secret that we believe in the power of mitochondria (and not just because mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell). But how familiar are you with the structure of this amazing component of the human body? To start, each mitochondria, or mitochondrion, is a “membrane-bound organelle found in the cytoplasm of almost all eukaryotic cells (cells with clearly defined nuclei), the primary function of which is to generate large quantities of energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Mitochondria are typically round to oval in shape and range in size from 0.5 to 10 μm. In addition to producing energy, mitochondria store calcium for cell signaling activities, generate heat, and mediate cell growth and death.”

The structure of the mitochondrion begins with the outer membrane, which is “freely permeable to small molecules and contains special channels capable of transporting large molecules. In contrast, the inner membrane is far less permeable, allowing only very small molecules to cross into the gel-like matrix that makes up the organelle’s central mass.” The inner membrane is also arranged into cristae, which are folds or ridges that help to maximize the surface area. Within the inner membrane is the matrix, which “contains the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of the mitochondrial genome and the enzymes of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle (also known as the citric acid cycle, or Krebs cycle), which metabolizes nutrients into by-products the mitochondrion can use for energy production.”[1] In layman’s terms, that basically means that the mitochondrion is where the magic happens in every cell that helps to power your body!

Even if you are not a biologist, there is still something fascinating about what is happening on the tiniest level of your body. And because there is so much happening at such a foundational level in your body, why not give your cells a boost with Bodē TEN? Bodē TEN is an ultra-premium nutritional supplement that enhances cellular energy production, increases stamina, and reduces oxidative stress.* Working at the cellular level, this proprietary formula provides essential nutrients needed to support your body’s mitochondria. As we have learned, your mitochondria do a lot of heavy lifting for your cells, so give them a boost  and take them up to level TEN!
