Finding Fall Motivation

Even though it feels like summer just started, fall is already upon us! The days are filling up with crisp breezes, cozy sweaters, and pumpkin spice everything. With that kind of vibe in the air, it can be easy to give into the desire to hibernate. Who wants to exercise and eat light, fit foods when you can just bury yourself in blankets and prepare yourself for the winter ahead? Holiday season (and holiday eating) are coming up quickly, so it is important to keep your motivation up so you do not give into autumn sluggishness.

When it comes to exercise, there are a lot of advantages to working out in the fall, especially if you like to exercise outside. With the temperatures starting to drop, that means it will not be so hot outside—hooray! Go for a hike to see the changing leaves, or take advantage of the cooler weather to ride your bicycle around town instead of driving if that is feasible for you. If you live near the ocean, autumn is a great time to participate in beach activities because they tend to be much less crowded as the tourists head home.

Fall also means school is fully back in session, but it does not have to be just for the kids! Many gyms and dance studios start classes in the fall so if you have always wanted to learn to tap dance, now is the time! Plus, since you will be indoors, the activity is weatherproof so if you live somewhere that gets snow early, you are still covered. Check out what is available in your area and find something new that you have always wanted to try.

Autumn is also a wonderful time to start incorporating fitness into all areas of your life. Say you want to stay inside and check out all the new fall TV show premieres; find a way to exercise while you watch! Jog in place, do lunges, lift free weights—the possibilities are only limited by your imagination. You could even set up a commercial challenge and see how many pushups or sit ups you can do during each commercial break. Then, by the time an hour long show is over, you will have done close to 20 minutes of exercise just by taking advantage of the commercials. Finally, a way to love commercials on a day that is not Super Bowl Sunday!

This autumn, fight the urge to hibernate and take advantage of the changing seasons to change up your workout routine. Explore new options and have fun with fall!
