Brain-Boosting Benefits of Omega-3

Brain-Boosting Benefits of Omega-3

In your quest for a healthier lifestyle, you might have heard a lot of buzz about omega-3, but what exactly is that? Omega-3 is an oil containing fatty acids like docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic (EPA).[1] According to the Harvard School of Public Health, omega-3 fats “are an integral part of cell membranes throughout the body and affect the function of the cell receptors in these membranes.”[2] Studies have also shown that omega-3 acids are very beneficial to the brain. DHA and EPA are essential for maintaining brain function because they are “abundant in the cell membranes of brain cells, preserving cell membrane health and facilitating communication between brain cells.”[3]

Now that we know how important omega-3 is, where can we get it? The obvious answer is via wild, coldwater fish varieties like salmon, mackerel, and herring. Omega-3 can also be found in chia seeds, flaxseeds, and walnuts (but leave the skin on the latter—that’s where all the good stuff is!)[4] Another excellent source of omega-3 is our very own Vemma Shake! Each serving contains 660 mg of omega-3 in addition to 16g of protein, 24g of carbohydrates, and 7g of fiber. Plus, the chocolate flavor of the Vemma Shake is a lot more appetizing than a spoonful of cod liver oil. So what are you waiting for? Start your day with a delicious brain boost from Vemma Shake!*
